Slope & Linear Functions

Overview

A refresher on slope, linear functions, and how graphs encode information — the language we will use throughout calculus.

Key Concepts

1

Slope m = rise / run = (y₂ − y₁) / (x₂ − x₁)

2

Linear functions: y = mx + b (constant slope everywhere)

3

Non-linear functions have varying slopes at different points

4

Positive slope → rising; negative slope → falling; zero → horizontal
